SPECIAL CARE FOR GOLD AND SILVER PERSONALIZED JEWELRY

HOW TO CLEAN GOLD PLATING JEWELRY

Although all jewelry can eventually tarnish you can be vigilant and properly care of your jewelry collection.

At JoyAmo Jewelry we recommend that you give each piece of jewelry in gold plating or sterling silver a quick clean after using them with a soft cleaning cloth, to remove oils, fingerprints, makeup, and dirt that may have accumulated from normal wear.

Once a week or two, we recommend a deeper clean.

SIMPLE EVERYDAY TIPS TO PROTECT AND KEEP THE SHINE 💡

1.- GOLDEN RULE: MAKEUP FIRST, THEN THE ACCESSORIES

Lotions, body lotions, hairspray, makeup, and cosmetics, in general, have chemicals that are harmful to any piece of jewelry, whether it is Sterling Silver 925 or 18K Gold Plating.

It is always best to apply your makeup first and then put on your jewelry to minimize the amount of exposure to abrasives and damaging substances of your jewelry.

2.- TAKE IT OFF BEFORE ENTERING THE GYM

Make sure to remove your jewelry before any intense physical activity, including swimming. This will protect your jewelry from reacting to the chemicals in your sweat or from any damage that may happen in contact sports, including the entanglement of chains in necklaces and bracelets.

Golder Rule: although working out is very good for your health, it’s not good for your jewelry, regardless of the metal!

3.- THE DO NOT BATHE WITH JEWELRY RULE!

Soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and body lotions may get you smelling fresh and heavenly clean, but the harmful chemicals they contain could also harm your personalized jewelry. Too much time in the shower while wearing your personalized necklace, bracelet, or rings can cause a film to form over the precious metal, dimming the sheen and diminishing its gorgeous shine.

4.- POOLS AND THE BEACH ARE NO PLACE FOR JEWELRY!

We all love swimming pools in summer. But you must take into account that pools and jacuzzis are full of chlorine that, if exposed for too long, can cause your jewelry to discolor. The salty water of the sea can also damage gold plating jewelry and will for sure oxidize sterling silver.

Golden Rule: Strip down into your bathing suit while you take your jewelry off!

5.- AVOID THE SPARKLE WHILE CLEANING

While we encourage your house cleaning, we remind you again that harmful chemicals and jewelry do not go together. While the chemicals in cleaning products are great for keeping your house sparkling clean and germ-free, they can be harmful to the quality, shine, and longevity of your precious jewelry pieces.

💍 PERSONALIZED JEWELRY SAFEKEEPING 💍

Properly storing your jewelry will do wonders for keeping it looking new and avoiding scratches.

Keep your customized jewelry in a box or a jewelry box where it won’t get tangled up with other items or damaged from too much movement.

A jewelry box with a soft felt lining is perfect, but you can get a regular shoebox with fabric to keep your items nestled and safe.

You can also get online flannel pouches that are great for storing jewelry and avoiding entanglement.

Jewelry pouches are very affordable and are great to travel with, especially when you go on vacations.

Anti-tarnish strips and polishing clothes are also great purchases to keep your jewelry away from oxidants and chemicals that can tarnish and tone down.

JEWELRY CARE INSTRUCTIONS FAQ

How can I keep my jewelry from tarnishing

The golden rule in jewelry is to keep your pieces dry. Do not store any piece of jewelry, regardless of the metal, in a humid place, like the bathroom. Separate your jewelry by metal and type. You can use flannel pouches, breathable fabric bags, or even Ziploc bags. You can also try a stackable jewelry organizer or something like drawer compartments to keep your pieces organized, separate, and clean. Jewelry boxes, jewelry organizers, or even jewelry pouches or stands can be ordered online on Amazon, eBay, and Ali Express.

Why does my jewelry tarnish so quickly

Your jewelry type of metal used as well as several environmental factors can contribute to jewelry tarnishing. The weather where you live and your body’s pH balance (sweat) can determine how quickly your jewelry becomes discolored.

Can you reverse tarnished jewelry

At JoyAmo we recommend you place your tarnished jewelry into an aluminum foil bowl and add baking soda and boiling water to trigger a reaction between the silver sulfide and the aluminum. In this way, the bothersome sulfur is transferred to the aluminum and you’re left with sparkly clean silver or gold plating jewelry.

How do you keep cheap jewelry from changing color

At JoyAmo we recommend you try a Jewelry Protectant Spray. Give your jewelry a protective shield that will help fight the elements that contribute to tarnishing. Not only you will be able to protect your favorite pieces of jewelry, but some sprays can also protect you from allergies like irritation and rashes if you have sensitive skin. This spray works fantastically with Sterling Silver and Gold Plating jewelry. You can order this jewelry protective spray online on Amazon, eBay, and Ali Express, which will last a long time.

How do I stop tarnishing

Always keep your jewelry dry and away from humidity, sweat, and chemicals of any type.

Does clear nail polish stop jewelry from turning

You can use clear nail polish to prevent discoloration and chipping on custom jewelry in Sterling Silver and Gold Plating. You can apply a thin coat of clear nail polish as protection. This will keep your less expensive jewelry in great shape!

What kind of jewelry will not tarnish

Jewelry in platinum, palladium, solid gold, cobalt, and titanium will not tarnish.

Does toothpaste help tarnished jewelry

It is a common myth that you can clean your jewelry with toothpaste. This is false! Toothpaste can severely damage diamonds, gemstones, gold, and silver. Toothpaste is a very abrasive substance not suitable for cleaning jewelry or any delicate item.

Does vinegar remove tarnish from jewelry

You can quickly restore and clean your jewelry or even your silverware with vinegar, water, and baking soda. This cleaning agent is a great option for many things, including your tarnished silver. Mix 1/2 cup of white vinegar with 2 tablespoons of baking soda in a bowl of lukewarm water. Let the silver soak for two to three hours and let the pieces air dry.

Why is my jewelry turning dark

Makeup, creams, body lotions, perfumes, or sweat can cause your silver or gold plating jewelry to turn black or discolor the skin. A light polish with your polish cloth usually takes it away. You can also polish your silver custom jewelry with a polishing product that you can find at any supermarket, jewelry store, or even online.

What jewelry can you shower in

While showering you can wear Solid Gold Jewelry, Plastic, Silicone, Glass, Platinum, and Titanium. We highly recommend not to wear Silver Jewelry. Gold Plating, Pearls, Diamonds, Gemstones, Zirconia, and Rhinestones when you take a shower.

Does 925 sterling silver tarnish

Pure silver does not tarnish in a pure oxygen environment. However, the copper that is contained in 925 sterling silver may react to the ozone and hydrogen sulfide in the air and cause the sterling silver to oxidize. Makeup, perfumes, hair sprays, and profuse sweating can also cause a quicker formation of tarnish.

Does real gold tarnish

Although pure gold itself is highly resistant to tarnish, gold alloys, which are commonly used in jewelry for increased durability, can still be susceptible. Gold tarnish typically occurs when the metal reacts with substances like sulfur, oxygen, or various chemicals present in the environment. As an element, gold holds the title of being one of the elements that is least reactive. In its pure form, gold does not rust or tarnish as it does not combine with oxygen easily. This is why pure gold stays as shiny as it does.
